WHEN DOING RIGHT IS WRONG

BY DON BURZYNSKI

Moses declare in Deuteronomy 12:8, “You shall not do at all what we are doing here today, every man doing whatever is right in his own eyes.”

The people were doing what was right in their own eyes, without consulting the One who alone has the right to decide what is right and wrong.

The essence of pride is “doing right” – that is, doing right in your own eyes. Thinking you have what it takes to do what God would have you to do is the essence of pride.

Humanism advocates self-sufficiency. The prime tenet of humanism is “I am my own center of reference.” “I have what it takes in myself ‘to be and do’ what ‘I’ want to be and do.” Humanism posits an autonomous, independent assertion of self-potential. “What I think and desire, I am” – self-image. “What I can conceive, I can achieve!”

“Doing right” is the curse of God’s people today. Many Christians even study their Bibles to determine what is the “right thing to do.” Paul testified that his confidence was “not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith” (Philippians 3:9). No performance in Paul’s life, rather a dependence upon the presence and person of Jesus Christ by faith.

Any character not derived from God is a “point of pride” because no man can know right from wrong on his own. This independent thinking is a delusion, as there is no independent-self, no human nature that operates separate from deity either God or Satan.

It was the Serpent in the Garden of Eden that introduced the lie of independence to man, “you will be like God, knowing good and evil” (Gen. 3:5). The desire to simply know what is right has been man's quest ever since The Fall of Man and is the deception of Satan. It is a misguided focus on behavioral performance, unwittingly a performance of sin and a work-of-the-flesh which misses identity and relational intimacy with God.

Righteousness is a person not a moral code or behavioral conduct.
Righteousness is not “do-right” or “believe-right” religion. No person can “know-right” or “be-right,” apart from knowing the ONE who is right-eous-ness – Jesus Christ. The Righteous ONE must reveal Himself to us and be our chosen Point of Reference our Center Point to experience right-behavior or righteousness. “Right-ness” or righteousness is always derived from Jesus Christ as Paul states in Philippians 1:11, “having been filled with the fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ.”

Unless we derive all that we “do” it will never “be” right. That’s because righteous character cannot be produced or performed, not even by attempting to implement Biblical principles in one’s life.

Righteousness is expressed thorough behavior as a person participates and is receptive to God’s righteous character and activity (grace). So, if you’ve been trying to do right – stop it. Stop living the lie of humanism and begin walking in the freedom that’s yours in Christ, which is what it means to be Christian. “For in it (the gospel) the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “But the righteous man shall live by faith” (Romans 1:17).
