Pride is the root or essence of all sin. Satan said, “I will make myself like the Most High” (Isaiah 14:14). Pride is self-orientation, contrary to character of God. The essence of the “pride of life” (1 John 2:16) is anything that exalts itself above God’s intended purpose and function for our lives. Pride offers the illusion of God-like qualities, wherein we boast in arrogance and worldly wisdom. Every person has developed patterns of pride i.e. flesh patterns. Eve wanted to be “like God” in her knowledge, and was not content to live dependent and derivative on Christ. The antidote to pride is humility. "God gives grace to the humble. Submit therefore to God" (James 4:6).
