Hurricanes, Shingles and God's Timing!

HurricaneIrma

Hurricane Irma was an uninvited storm that non of us were expecting. She interrupted our lives with high winds, flooding rain and uncertainty. The path of the hurricane couldn't be determined, which effected our decision to stay or evacuate. Rich Campbell, a reporter for TCPalm wrote, "The only thing worse than the actual hurricane is the anxiety preceding it."

Irma left us with downed trees, power lines and no electricity to run our A/C in the blazing hot temperatures of Florida's summer. She also caused much anxiety for many before and after the storm. Times of trial tend to reveal the best and worst in people, depending on whom they are relying on in any given moment.

What about God's timing in all of this stormy activity? Often people ask, " What's God up to?" As if he is the blameworthy cause of such disasters. That's not my God! For He is good and always has our best interests at heart, even in the midst of hardship and therefore is not the source of evil. God is good all the time, regardless of the circumstances of life.

Many who are not personally acquainted with this loving God, struggle during times of adversity. For them, God's timing may seem like waiting for an eternity, and in a sense it is, as he is the Eternal One. Their problem is a distorted understanding of who God is.

The first phrase that often comes to mind is 'God's timing.' His timing can seem like hurry-up and wait, as many people want God to operate according to their time-clock. However, God declares through the prophet Isaiah, “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways And My thoughts than your thoughts." (Isaiah 55:8-9)

If we would truly walk by faith, trusting him as our life, knowing that He "...causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose" (Romans 8:28).

God’s timing is perfect, just as all of God’s ways are perfect (Psalm 18:30; Galatians 4:4). God’s timing is never early, and it’s certainly never been late. Often the greatest challenge for us in the midst of storms, is being aware of God at work.

A Personal Testimony

God's timing has been perfect in my life and oftentimes it's when I least expect it and am in dire need.

God's timing is perfect.

On Wednesday August 2nd I was hospitalized for 3 days to undergo medicinal treatment (Cardioversion, Transesophageal Echocardiogram, Sotalol Loading) for Atrial Fibrillation. Dr. Pinsky was confident that this treatment would have me healthy enough to travel to Bolivia for the planned 11 day mission trip one week after being released from the hospital.

God's timing is perfect.

I returned home on August 21st and was back to work at CrossLife on Tuesday the 22nd. The following week I began to experience flu like symptoms and was extremely weak and experiencing severe pain in the "basement" area of my body, which then led to a severe outbreak of the Shingles. I couldn't work on Thursday and my dermatologist confirmed on Friday morning September 1st that I was suffering from a worse case scenario of the shingles and it could last for weeks or even months. What would I do and how would CrossLife survive financially?

God's timing is perfect.

After Labor Day weekend on Tuesday September 5th reports that Hurricane Irma was heading toward Florida began to cause everyone to prepare and or evacuate. No one would have come for counseling the week prior to the storm, even if I was not flat on my back suffering from the Shingles. What better time to be down when I wouldn't have been working due to the storm anyway.

God knew, for His timing is perfect.

CrossLife is a faith-based ministry and is supported by donations, primarily from those who receive counseling, and was shut down for over two weeks. By Thursday September 14th the Ministries' finances were depleted and we were in the red. What would God do?

Over the next two days God moved on the hearts of those who had been blessed by the ministry. That Thursday the ministry received a donation of almost $1000.00! On Friday an online donation of $1000.00 came through and yet another donation of $150.00 was dropped off at the office. None of these were expected but WOW, GOD'S TIMING IS PERFECT!

"For by one offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified" (Hebrews 10:14).

Never underestimate how significant your obedience to God is. We don't always see the entirety of His plans, but rest assured, His will is being performed by those who allow the expression of His character through them. What a miraculous privilege it is to be a pawn in the hand of the Master Orchestrator of all things good.
